Religious Education at Christ Church

At Christ Church Church of England Primary School, Religious Education (RE) has a high profile in school life.

Our weekly RE lessons aim to enable pupils to engage meaningfully and critically with the multi-religious and multi-secular world in which they live. Through the study of Christianity as a diverse global living faith, alongside a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, children develop knowledge, understanding and respect for the diversity of beliefs and practices across cultures and societies.

Each lesson is focussed around questions of meaning, purpose and identity, while also exploring and developing their own personal worldviews and ways of believing, thinking and living. Teachers ensure that lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners to ensure every child is supported to succeed and flourish.

This is in line with our  curriculum intent and the 2026 Statement of Entitlement for Church of England Schools.

We follow the 2024 SDBE RE Syllabus across the school, enhancing the units to fit the needs of the pupils and nature of the school. Please see curriculum map below.

The teaching and learning approach has three disciplinary lenses or ‘ways of knowing’ (believing, thinking, living), which are woven together as golden threads to provide breadth and balance within teaching and learning about religions and beliefs, underpinning the aims of RE.

Identifying and making sense of core religious and non-religious beliefs and concepts; understanding what these beliefs mean within their traditions; recognising how and why sources of authority (such as texts) are used, expressed and interpreted in different ways, and developing skills of interpretation.

Evaluating, reflecting on and connecting the beliefs and practices studied; allowing pupils to challenge ideas studied, and the ideas studied to challenge pupils’ thinking; discerning possible connections between these and pupils’ own lives and ways of understanding the world.

Examining how and why people put their beliefs into action in diverse ways, within their everyday lives, within their communities and in the wider world.

We fully implemented this syllabus across the school in Spring 2025. And since then, pupils are more enthusiastic and engaged in their RE learning:
